Naya got her first taste of fame when she landed a starring role in the long-running musical drama, Glee. In 2009 when she landed the role of the ice queen lesbian cheerleader, Santana Lopez, in Glee.

In the second season, Naya became a series regular and Santana was given more high-profile storylines. One big line was the development of her romantic feelings for her best friend Brittany Pierce and the realization she is a lesbian. Naya received widespread praise for her portrayal of Santana.

Pushing for LGBTQ+ representation

In season two, Rivera explored her kinder, more vulnerable side, and behind the scenes, pushed for Santana’s relationship with Brittany to be taken more seriously. Originally, it was conceived as a brief punchline. Even thiugh Naya was straight she still pushed for representation

"It started off as this funny little thing, like “oh yeah she just randomly hooks up with her friend Brittany,” Rivera explained. “But I was kind of encouraging them to make it more serious and not play around with it ‘cause there are people out there that it’s not a joke to. It’s their real lives”. She understood that she could achieve something truly meaningful instead.

Rivera played one of the only queer Latinx women on TV – and was certainly one of the first in a series as high-profile as Glee. In the role, she navigated sensitive and difficult plot lines with tremendous depth.

It’s no exaggeration to state that, for a lot of young LGBTQ+ people growing up, Naya Rivera, was far more than another actor playing a cheerleader on a TV show. She was a true and powerful reflection for queer people – what an enormous and powerful legacy to leave behind.

The Quarterback
Glee: Season 5, Episode 3
In an emotional instalment, the Gleeks pay tribute to the late Cory Monteith, celebrating the life of the actor and his character Finn Hudson.

If you start the video at 1:38 to 2:00. This was her real emotion because in real life she as close with Cory, so everyone reaction to her was 100% real.

Every single scene that happened in that episode was scripted to happen that way. The emotion was not, obviously, and we know that because Ryan talked about how the emotion was so raw that for a lot of the scenes they used the first take

Naya Rivera said she and Cory Monteith were like siblings. In her autobiography Sorry, Not Sorry, Rivera said she and Monteith were like siblings. One day, when Monteith asked her why they never “hooked up,” Rivera said she told him she never saw him that way. She said she playfully kissed him on the lips and they never spoke about it again.

When she found out about his death she cried as she was very close with Cory.

Similar to Cory, Nayas death was unexpected and shocked the people who cared for them.

When I found out about Cory death . I was watching Glee and I got to his tribute episode. I cried watching it but I also looked it up and Cory did indeed die in real life. He died in 2013 but it wasn't until 2017 when I found out. I stared to cry once I read it. After that I couldn't continue the season or even watch that episode because it made me emotional.
